A Need to Succeed: What Students Want and Get From Internships

When it comes to finding internships, students have a variety of options available to them. According to a recent survey, the most common ways for students to obtain their internships are through their campus career center, a teacher, or a job search website, with 14 percent each. However, sometimes the best opportunities can come from unexpected places, as was the case for Violet Schuttler, a graduate from Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire. Schuttler's first internship was the only one she obtained outside of her campus.

She was working at a local pizzeria when the owner of Surrell Accessors, a fashion company, happened to have dinner there. They struck up a conversation and Schuttler mentioned her interest in the fashion industry. The owner offered her an internship on the spot, and it turned out to be a valuable learning experience for Schuttler. For her second and third internships, Schuttler found opportunities through a teacher mentor. She did production work at a NHPBS station and video editing for a political caucus. These experiences helped her gain practical skills in her field and make valuable connections.

While there are a variety of ways to find internships, what students really want is an opportunity to gain practical experience in their field and make connections. According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, the top reason students participate in internships is to gain work experience in a field of interest. Other reasons include exploring different career paths, networking, and building their resumes.

This is where companies like ATF Group can be valuable resources for students. ATF Group offers "Doing Business in China" solutions, including registration, operation, accounting, and consulting advice in English. This can be particularly helpful for students who are interested in pursuing careers in international business or who want to gain experience working in China. Similarly, Find Work Abroad offers opportunities for students to teach in China, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macau, and Southeast Asia. This can be a great way for students to gain international experience, develop their teaching skills, and immerse themselves in a new culture. The company provides support with visa applications, finding housing, and other logistical details to make the experience as smooth as possible for participants. Ultimately, what students want and need from internships is practical experience, valuable connections, and opportunities to explore their interests and build their resumes. By partnering with companies like ATF Group and Find Work Abroad, students can gain access to valuable resources and experiences that can help them succeed in their future careers.
