Is teaching English in China really suitable for me? I've never taught before and have no teaching experience.

The conundrum of teaching English in China without prior experience - a predicament that has left numerous aspiring educators in a state of utter bewilderment. Can I really embark on this venture sans teaching background? The doubts are palpable, and it's not hard to fathom why. Many an applicant contemplating this career path is convinced that the absence of relevant qualifications or experience renders them unfit for the task, and even if they do muster up the courage to take the leap, they're skeptical about securing a decent salary and reasonable working hours.

As a novice educator, I have to admit that the prospect of teaching English in China can be daunting. But let me tell you, my fears were completely unfounded. The reality is far more promising than I ever could have imagined. In fact, it's an entirely feasible proposition, with a monthly salary of at least 1,100 GBP (or 1,600 USD) being the norm, often accompanied by the added perk of free accommodation every month. Sure, this may be comparable to your before-tax salary back home, but there are some significant differences to consider. For one thing, your income tax is a mere 3%. And let's not forget that there are no NI or insurance payments to come off your salary. Plus, there are no additional taxes on your rent (no council tax if you're from the UK). When it comes to daily living costs, eating out, travel and other expenses equate to around 10 times less than back home. And as for apartment and rent costs? They're around three times less than back home. The result is that disposable income is a whopping 60% higher than back home, on average. Teaching English in China, even on your first year, you'll find that after expenses and going out/recreation expenses, you'll have around 4,000-5,000 RMB per month spare (that's around 550 GBP or 800 USD) per month. But it's not just about the money - the experience is truly invaluable. Broadening your horizons, learning a new culture and language, and living life in a completely different way to what you're used to is an experience that's hard to put a price on. A year teaching English in China will allow you to learn how the other side of the world lives, enjoy and experience the fascinating culture, see the wonderful sights, temples and scenery, as well as meet some of the world's most friendly, welcoming people you'd never have the chance to meet anywhere except their home country. And let me tell you, teaching English in China is an adventure that I would highly recommend - even without experience. What's more, it's a chance to gain valuable international work experience, which can be a huge bonus when applying for jobs back home.
